De toppolitica heeft sinds haar geboorte zowel de Zweedse als de Nederlandse nationaliteit. Na haar studies werkte ze van 1992 tot 2007 op het ministerie van Economische Zaken, eerst als beleidsmedewerker Midden- en Oost-Europa, daarna als hoofd parlementaire zaken. Naast een origine van Finse Adel is Kasja in 2002 ingelijfd in de Nederlandse adel, en mag zich sinds jonkvrouw noemen. Sinds 2017, met een onderbreking in 2019-2020, is ze vicepremier en minister van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties in het Nederlandse kabinet-Rutte III. Kajsa is getrouwd met Irene van den Brekel en samen hebben ze twee kinderen.
