Never Before Seen Color Photos of The Titanic

A Mother & Daughter Who Were Supposed To Start A New Life In Idaho

This mother-daughter tandem named Charlotte and Marjorie Collyer were among those who survived the whole tragedy. They had second-class tickets and were on the ship because they were about to start a new life in Idaho. Sadly, Charlotte’s husband, Harvey, didn’t survive.

The Collyer girls attracted a lot of attention from the media, and they were even greeted by a ton of reporters once they reached the United States after getting rescued. They later went back to England, and Charlotte ended up remarrying. She passed away in 1916 due to tuberculosis, and Marjorie went under the wing of her uncle Walter Collyer.

Some Of Those Who Were Destined To Live

Photographed above are the passengers of the RMS Titanic whose destiny was to survive the tragedy. This group of people was on a lifeboat, rowing their way o the RMS Carpathia. The boats barely had any legroom, so the people were just sitting for hours.

Merely hopping on the lifeboat didn’t mean that everything was going to start to get easy, because all these people had to endure the cold weather. They had to be careful while they were on the boat because falling into the icy water will lead to their death.

You Get What You Pay For

Everyone who boarded the RMS Titanic thought they were going to have the time of their life since the idea of getting on a large ship was such a dream come true at that time. In the Titanic movie, they were able to do a great job of showing how life on the ship was.

Those who had money stayed in the first-class area, which promised the most lavish amenities possible. Those who were less fortunate stayed on another end of the Titanic, and couldn’t call their trip a 5-star vacation. One thing all passengers enjoyed whatever class they were in was the gorgeous ocean views.

Lining Up to Say Farewell

The Titanic’s maiden voyage, or the day it began its journey, happened on April 10, 1912. Many people didn’t get to land a ticket for the ship, so they just watched from the docks. Many people waived goodbye to their family and friends, and they were shouting “farewell.”

At that time, their goodbyes filled with positivity since they all expected to see them again after the trip. What these hundreds of people on the dock didn’t realize is that it was going to be their final farewell already. They didn’t foresee the Titanic to become one of the most infamous ships in history.

Monster Propellers

Since the Titanic was huge, 882 feet 9 inches to be exact, it was a given that it needed massive propellers. The photo above shows you just how huge they were next to humans. The two side propellers were 7.2m in diameter while the center one was 5.2m.

These propellers were the biggest ones in history, and even the cruise ships in our modern-day don’t have propellers this big. The engineers who worked on the Titanic wanted it to be powerful and had the vision of it getting talked about in history books.

It Would’ve Trended On Twitter

The Titanic was such a hot topic back then, and if it got built today, we’re sure it would be all over the internet. Every single journalist from around the world back then was talking about the ship, and everyone wanted to secure a ticket of their own.

Having a ticket for the Titanic was something that would show everyone that a person possessed an impressive fortune in the bank. During that time, many people wanted to show that they were wealthy and could buy anything. No one had a clue that the same ticket everyone wanted was to be a one-way ticket to their demise.

Horses Did The Transporting

Building the Titanic was far from easy, and sources say around three thousand workers shed blood, sweat, and tears to bring the ship to life. Back then, they didn’t have all the advanced machinery that made tasks like transporting parts easy.

The anchor of the ship almost 16 tons, and since there were no big cars or trucks at that time, they had to make use of horses. One horse didn’t do the job, for they had to use twenty horses to transport the anchor from the Netherton forge shop to the railway station in Dudley. It then traveled to Fleetwood by rail, until finally getting to Belfast via ship.

The Day Has Finally Arrived

Once the workers finished building the Titanic, all the people with tickets couldn’t wait to go on board and start their journey. Everyone with the first-class tickets got welcomed on the ship in such a lavish manner, and they each got escorts that showed them to their rooms.

You could see that all these wealthy people had the best clothes on, and it’s as if they were all Instagram influencers who were going to take a lot of photos that day. First-class passengers had the upper deck all to themselves, and it looks like that the amount they paid for the tickets were all worth it.

The Man In Charge

Every ship needs a captain, and the RMS Titanic’s was Captain Edward John Smith. He had such a good reputation when it came to taking charge of large ships. Sources say that the salary he had was twice the amount regular ship captains were making at that time.

Photographed above is him posing on what looks like the upper deck of the boat. People considered him to be a celebrity back then, but then it seems like he was about to get even more famous, this time for all the wrong reasons.

A Literal Dreamboat

The Titanic was like a large hotel on the sea, and its makers made sure it would fit a lot of guests and crew members. Reports say that around 2,224 people got to board the Titanic in April 1912. About 325 were the ones who were able to secure first-class tickets.

The people in the third class of the ship was estimated to be around 706. The reason why they went on the Titanic was that they wanted to head to the United States and start a new life. Whatever social class a person was in, everyone saw the Titanic as a chance for a better life.

No One Is Going To Get Hungry

With the number of people that hopped on the ship, it was only right that they did a lot of planning when it came to food and drinks. They were able to store enough food on the ship to last for the whole journey, and it was all stored in the Lower Deck.

Sources say that the fresh eggs the crew had on the ship amounted to about 40,000. Those with money even got to enjoy alcohol like wine and champagne. When it sunk, there were many food and drinks that were not consumed and are probably still on the ocean floor right now.

Fast & Furious

The heart of the RMS Titanic was the engine room, and it had to be watched over by a lot of laborers. Sources say that 325 of the crew members were working in the engine department. The ship could reach a 23-knot top speed, which is about 26 miles per hour.

At that time, most people considered that kind of speed to be impressive, most notably because the Titanic was massive. Today, it’s an entirely different story because 23 knots is slow already. Technology is the main reason why modern ships can achieve even higher speeds today.

A Cruise For Honeymooners

Many people went on the Titanic with family or friends, but there were also a good number of them who went with the love of their lives. Sources say that a total of thirteen couples on the ship were on their honeymoon.

Getting on the journey of the Titanic seemed like such a romantic idea at that time. Once they boarded the ship, they received champagne and roses. They all had high hopes that they’re starting a new amazing chapter in their lives, but sadly things were about to come crashing down.

The Trendy Cafe Influencers Would’ve Loved

Cafes have always been something people love, and the Titanic made sure that there was a cafe on the ship. It was called Cafe Parisien, and the place was where all the cool people hung out. The passengers loved sipping on a cup of tea while mingling with people.

It was also like a red carpet event in the area since people had such fancy clothes. Aside from the tea and coffee served there, something everyone loved was the breathtaking view of the Atlantic ocean people had when they were sitting on their tables. The food was as lavish as the place because they served roasted duck, salmon, and oysters.

Living Like Royalty In First-Class

Those who stayed in the first-class area didn’t have to worry about not sleeping well since their rooms were cozy and luxurious. Looking at the furniture today won’t impress you, but people viewed them as top-notch during that era.

The passengers in the first-class got to feel like they were royalty on the ship, and they even had a private deck they could go to any time. These people initially thought that they got the best accommodations, but they later suffered once the ship sunk. Deck B, where the luxury rooms were, reportedly had the least amount of survivors.

Dining Hall Or High School Cafeteria?

If the first-class area deserved a magazine spread, the third-class was the complete opposite. Photographed above was the dining area that somehow resembled a high school cafeteria. Despite the basic interior, the people got to eat good food like baked potatoes and roast beef.

Those in third-class weren’t choosy with anything, so they enjoyed whatever they received. Some might even say third-class guests had more fun than those who were in the first-class area. If you watched the Titanic movie, then you’d know that Rose loved dancing with the third-class passengers.

An Extremely Old-School Gym

Believe it or not, there were already people back then who were crazy about exercising. They didn’t have social media to share photos or videos of their routines, but stepping out in public with a fantastic physique was enough. The photo above shows you how the Titanic’s gym looked.

The equipment back then was different, but it still got the job done. In case you were wondering, the guy wearing white in the photo is using an old-school rowing machine. The other pieces of equipment in the room were an electric horse, electric camel, and cycling machines. Only those in first-class were allowed to make use of the facility.

Not Even A Rowing Machine Could’ve Prepared Anyone For What Was Going To Happen

Even if you’re not a professional rower, you can still feel like one when you hop on a rowing machine. It mimics the feeling of rowing a boat, and you will lose fat and gain muscle when using this machine.

Those who used it got a good workout in, but they didn’t expect that they would be needing all of the strength they have a few days after boarding the ship. No kind of routine could’ve prepared anyone for the tragedy that was about to happen several days after leaving Southampton.

The Safe Way To Take A Dip While On The Ship

Even if swimming in the ocean can sound fun, it just isn’t safe. Most cruise ships these days come with wave pools, water slides, and swimming pools, and it looks like the Titanic also had a pool area of its own.

There was an indoor pool that reportedly had saltwater, but it wasn’t placed on the ship for anyone to use. It was for those who wanted to do laps as a way of exercising. Near the pool area was a Turkish bath, which was a perfect place to relax. Reports say the pool room was the last room that sunk because the engineers made it water-proof.

Tea Time Was A Must

While others prefer to enjoy some cocktails during happy hour, many women onboard the RMS Titanic always made sure that they had tea time daily. These women in the photo above were first-class passengers, and you could see that they were all dressed well while having tea.

The ambiance they had was cozy and calming because there was a band playing. Those who were allowed inside the tea room got to devour snacks like mini sandwiches and buttered toast. Alcohol was also being served the whole day for those who wanted a buzz.

The Girl’s Corner

Since men could get rowdy at times, there was a particular room in the RMS Titanic which only accommodated the female passengers. They could access it from 8 am to 11:30 pm, and it was a perfect place for them to talk in peace.

Mostly first-class guests made use of this room. The furniture, carpet, and big windows made it such a cozy place for mingling and relaxation. The pink curtains they used for the window just added to the femininity of the whole space. If women had cellphones back then, they would’ve taken countless selfies here.

5-Star Accommodation

Those who got to stay in the spacious first-class rooms felt like they were sleeping in a 5-star hotel room. The beds were soft and cozy, and there was a lot of space to move around the room. Photographed above is one of the most lavish cabins on the ship.

It had this whole blue vibe to it, and it came with an extra bed and a connecting room. The room looked like it was perfect for a couple with a child. The other cabins on the ship were impressive too, but not all were at par with this beautiful blue room.

What Held Everything Together

The RMS Titanic needed a strong foundation since it was massive, so the makers of the ship had this large crossbeam added to hold the boat together. Photographed above is a man standing next to the beam, and it gives you a good idea of just how massive the beam was.

Creating something like it isn’t easy, and it took more than two years for the Titanic to get built. The whole process of making it was dangerous, and a total of eight workers passed away on the job. A total of 28 workers had severe accidents, while 218 had minor ones.

Radiotelegraphs Were A Thing

Radiotelegraphs were very popular during the 1910s since there were no flat screens TVs and cable internet yet. Photographed above is the RMS Titanic’s radio operator that worked for a lot of hours daily. He informs people about the ship’s status through a periodic signal.

When the ship started sinking, the operator sent distress signals right away to get help. He didn’t give up and kept sending out singles until he took his last breath. The Radio Act of 1912 later got established, and it says that radio communications on ships have to run 24/7, and they should have a backup power supply for emergency distress calls.

Where People Got The Best Views

One of the best places to be on the RMS Titanic was the top deck. It promised incredible views of the ocean, and there were a lot of reclining chairs where people could just chill and enjoy the view. It was also a beautiful place to watch the sunrise and sunset.

The area was often empty once there was no sun because it got too cold. Only the first-class guests had access to the deck, and they had the option to have some tea while hanging out there. The younger first-class guests also enjoyed it here because they had a designated social area.

Ladies First

The RMS Titanic wasn’t a ship that was prepared for a tragedy because it lacked lifeboats to accommodate all the guests. They made the women and children board the lifeboats first, so women ended up taking the lead once everything came crashing down.

Those in the lifeboats spent hours waiting for them to get rescued, the last group of survivors reportedly got picked up at 8:30 am already. They experienced ten hours of stress and anxiety, so you can just imagine how happy they were when the rescue ship came. The women deserve praise for being able to row the lifeboats to safety.

The Iconic Grand Staircase

In the Titanic film, the grand staircase was such a memorable area, and it looks like they tried their best to make it look like the one from the real RMS Titanic. The actual ship was massive, so there was room for two staircases.

The iconic Grand Staircase was for those with first-class tickets, while another one was for those with second-class tickets. Harland and Wolff was the company responsible for building the whole ship, and they indeed got paid a lot of money for a job well done. In 2019, InfraStrata acquired the company for $7.4 million.

The Well-Designed Glass Dome

The Grand Staircase always had great lighting because of the glass dome above it that gave a lot of natural light when the sun was out. Sources say it got made from glass and wrought iron. People loved the dome, and the media even kept talking about it.

It was one of the things that showed people how much detail got placed into designing and building the ship. Even the most luxurious staircase in any cool mansion can’t match the feeling people had when they were on the RMS Titanic’s Grand Staircase.

It Felt Like Winter

Even if high-tech air conditioning units and electric fans were a thing back then, the RMS Titanic still wouldn’t need them because of how cold it was. If you guys noticed, people wore a layer of clothes just to warm themselves up.

The first-class passengers were the ones who beat the cold the most because they had access to fireplaces. Most rooms in the first-class area that was for socializing got equipped with electric heating. Those in the other parts of the ship just had insulated ducts that were giving off warm air.

The Second-Class Guests Had A Taste Of Luxury Too

If people didn’t have enough funds to secure a first-class ticket, then their next option is the second-class ticket. One of the best things second-class guests got to enjoy was the lounge area. It was a room where people could chat, smoke, and just hang out when they’re bored.

In a massive ship like the RMS Titanic, socializing is the main thing that kept people occupied. Before the ship hitting an iceberg, everyone was all smiles and were have the best time ever. The thought of the ship sinking didn’t cross people’s minds.

The Lounge For The Elite

If you guys thought the second-class lounge looked good, just take a look at the lounge for the first-class guests. It was undeniably the best lounge on the ship, and the furniture pieces inside the room made it look like it was ready for a magazine pictorial.

The first-class lounge had more decorations than any other lounge on the ship, and there were a lot of crew members working in the area. The wealthy guests who had access to the room were allowed to hang out here anytime between 8 am until 11 pm.

The Titanic Victims’ Savior

The Carpathia is the steamship that people remember for saving the passengers who survived the Titanic’s sinking.  Arthur Rostron was the ship’s captain, and he received an award for his rescue efforts during the tragedy. Photographed above is socialite Molly Brown handing him his prize.

In the end, around 705 people in total survived and boarded the Carpathia. It took about 3.5 hours for the Carpathia to reach the place where the Titanic sunk. Rostron and his crew didn’t see much when they arrived since the ship was already underwater.

First-Class Cabins Had Connecting Rooms

Most of the rooms in the first-class rooms featured connecting rooms. There was a smaller room that had a bed, and sources say that it was for those with children. Other wealthy people made their butlers stay in a smaller room.

Connecting rooms don’t surprise anyone today, and people can usually get good deals thanks to hotel packages. In case you were wondering, the situation in the second and third-class area of the Titanic was completely different because they used bunk beds and had to use shared bathrooms.

It Wasn’t Cheap To Stay In First-Class

The rates the guests had to pay to enjoy the first-class amenities were extremely high, so only those with a big bank account could stay there. Sources say that the first-class parlor suite on the ship costs around $4,350, which is about $100K in today’s value.

Guests got what they paid for because each room got decorated with some pretty upscale decorations. The design of the rooms got inspired by the era of Louis XV, Queen Anne, and Louis XVI. People might think these rooms look so simple today, but everyone in the 1910s thought they were the best of the best.

Why The Staff Didn’t Need To Use The Hallways

During the 1910s, those who possessed a big fortune often felt like they were above anyone else. Such a belief is crazy in our modern-day, but it was the sad reality of the world back then. In the first-class area of the RMS Titanic, the staff’s quarters were all strategically hidden.

All the rooms were connected so that they can refrain from walking down the same hallway as the affluent guests. The staff members didn’t receive a big paycheck, but they still preferred to have low income rather than no income.

How Expensive Was The Titanic?

When you read about all the nice amenities that RMS Titanic had, you can’t help but wonder the total cost it took to build the whole ship. Such a vessel requires a lot of hours of designing and building, so you can’t expect the sum to be a cheap one.

According to reports, building a ship like the Titanic during its era cost around $7.5 million. That’s about $175 million in today’s value. These days, fancy cruise ships cost at least $550 million to make. Some can even cost up to as much as $1 billion.

The Two Brothers Who Had Luck On Their Side

There were a total of 109 children on the RMS Titanic, but sadly, only 56 were able to survive. These two adorable boys in the photo above were among the lucky survivors. Their names are Edmond and Michael Navratil. Unfortunately, their father was among those who passed away.

These young boys were part of the second-class guests, and one fact is that all the children in the second-class survived. Michel and Edmond were lucky because their mother stayed in France and didn’t go with them on the Titanic. It took about two weeks before they saw their mother again.

The Last Minute Explosion

Those who survived the sinking of the RMS Titanic were overflowing with fear and anxiety because of how fast everything happened, and what caused more distress was a loud explosion that occurred. The ship’s hydraulic system exploded when the boat reached the bottom of the ocean.

The people in the lifeboats heard the explosion, and they were all curious about what caused it. Physicists were the one who analyzed everything that happened and came to the conclusion that it was the hydraulic system. They’re lucky that it didn’t explode while they were still on the ship.

The One Who Saw The Iceberg

Because the RMS Titanic lacked a lot of helpful technology, there were designated people who were on the lookout for any danger coming their way. Crewman Frederick Fleet was the one who spotted the iceberg. His eyesight must be perfect because he didn’t use any binoculars.

He was among the people who survived the tragedy, and he later revealed that he might’ve spotted the iceberg sooner if they gave him binoculars. He says that it was possible to avoid the whole tragedy if only they saw the icebergs sooner. Frederick became depressed for several years and thought everything was his fault.

They Were Never Ready For A Serious Emergency

When the RMS Titanic had its Maiden Voyage back in April 1912, the thought of colliding with an iceberg didn’t cross anyone’s mind. The ship’s safety features like the remotely activated watertight doors and watertight compartments were advanced, but they should have invested in more lifeboats.

They were able to provide many people with life vests, but it didn’t do much since merely jumping into the cold water will be the death of you. Sources revealed that the ship could have enough lifeboats for everyone, but the captain didn’t think it was necessary.
