Netflix Shows That Have Been Cancelled or Renewed for 2020

Ozark (Renewed)

Ozark has received various positive reviews from the critics. It was applauded, especially for its tone, direction, and acting. The series is a crime drama that stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney as a married couple. They relocate their family to Ozarks after a money-laundering scheme goes wrong.

The series has received fourteen Primetime Emmy Award nominations. Not only that, but Bateman and Julia Garner have also won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, respectively. With such huge popularity and an amazing storyline, Netflix announced that there would be a fourth and final season of the show.

The Ranch (Canceled)

Launched in the year 2016, The Ranch deserves all the praise. It features blunt, humorous, and outspoken characters with silly conservative ideals. Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson were once co-stars in That ’70s Show unite again in The Ranch with exceptional chemistry. Both the actors are playing the role of brothers, Colt and Rooster Bennett.

The series has four seasons consisting of twenty episodes in each season. All the episodes are named after American country music songs, which makes it all the more interesting. The final episodes of the series were launched in 2020 before the show was wrapped.

Osmosis (Cancelled)

Osmosis was released on March 29, 2019, on Netflix. It is a French science fiction web television consisting of eight episodes in the first season. Osmosis stars, Agathe Bonitzer, Suzanne Rault-Balet, Manoel Dupont, Gaël Kamilindi, and Hugo Becker.

It is set in near-future Paris and displays a new dating app called Osmosis. The application can help a person decode true love by digging deep into the user’s brain. However, finding a perfect match comes with a price to pay – the technology can also find the darkest secrets of a person. While the series was considered a hit, Netflix decided to put an end on Osmosis. 

Messiah (Cancelled)

Messiah gained decent reviews; however, the series got canceled after just one season. The series is an American thriller web television series, which was released on January 1, 2020. It stars Mehdi Dehbi, Michelle Monaghan, Melinda Page, John Ortiz, Timer Sisley, Jane Adams, and Will Travel.

The cancelation of the Messiah is speculated to be due to the controversial religious content. However, another reason is speculated to be the high expense of filming in different locations all around the world. The series is based on the modern world’s reaction to a man who appears miraculously as Jesus. His sudden appearance makes him the center of various doubts.

Santa Clarita Diet (Canceled)

Horror is a genre that is not liked by everyone, but it is still prevalent in web series like Santa Clarita Diet. The horror-comedy web series revolves around Drew Barrymore as Sheila Hammond, who undergoes metamorphosis and starts craving human flesh. The web series is an excellent blend of comedy and horror as the family tries to control her while dealing with various other issues.

After the decent success of this out of the box show, Netflix stood at canceling it. The speculated reason behind the cancelation is the show did not hit off that well with the audience and, of course, the financial reasons.

Jessica Jones (Canceled)

Jessica Jones is an American web television series based on the Marvel Comics character by the same name. The series was created by Netflix and produced by Marvel Television. It stars Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, who is a former superhero. She opens her detective agency and becomes a private investigator after Kilgrave, the show’s villain, makes her kill someone.

The series took a different approach while telling a superhero story. Although fans loved it, the show is being canceled by Netflix. It also features Eka Darville, Rachael Taylor, and Carrie-Anne Moss, along with Erin Moriarty, Wil Travel, and Mike Colter in the first season.

Soundtrack (Cancelled)

Soundtrack premiered on Netflix in December 2019. It is an American musical drama web series that stars Jenna Dewan, Callie Hernandez, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Paul James, Megan Ferguson, and Campbell Scott. The series is created by Joshua Safran, who is also the executive producer alongside Ali Krug and Megan Ellison.

Safran is one of the members of the creative team of Gossip Girl and is also leading the Gossip Girl reboot on HBO Max. The soundtrack was debuted two days before The Witcher and after season 2 of You. Despite gaining a great amount of attention, Netflix canceled the drama in January 2020.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Cancelled)

The supernatural horror series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is based on the Archie comic book series of the same name. Warner Bros. Television produces it with Archie Comics and Berlanti Productions. The first three seasons of the series received good reviews and were liked by fans worldwide. However, in July 2020, Netflix announced that the last part would be the last.

The series follows Sabrina Spellman and her loved ones fighting the terrifying threats. It includes The Weird, The Returned, and The Void. While Sabrina fights these challenges, there will also be a romantic angle in Sabrina’s life.

Marianne (Canceled)

Marianne is a horror web television show created and directed by Samuel Bodin. It is written by Quoc Dang Tran along with Bodin and stars Victoire Du Bois, Lucie Boujenah, and Tiphaine Daviot. The story of the series revolves around Emma, a young horror novelist. She realizes that the evil character she has created in her novel has joined her in the real world and is now creating havoc.

There are some really creative brains involved in this project, which keeps you on edge until the end. It was released on September 13, 2019. However, Netflix canceled it after one season in January 2020.

V Wars (Cancelled)

Canceled after season 1, V Wars is an American sci-fi horror web series based on the novel series by Jonathan Maberry. It premiered in December 2019 and stars Ian Somerhalder, Jacky Lai, Peter Outerbridge, Adrian Holmes, and Kyle Breitkopf.

The series is a vampire contagion drama that was canceled right after three months of premiering on Netflix. Ian Somerhalder, who played the role of Luther Swann, took to Instagram to announce the news and promised the fans that they would hear more from Swann. The fans replied that they were eagerly waiting for the next chapter of V Wars.

Easy (Canceled)

Easy is a comedy-drama series consisting of 25 episodes. The first season was released on Netflix in September 2016. The second season was launched in 2017, and later in 2018, it was renewed for a third season, which premiered in 2019.

The series follows the lives of various individuals who live in Chicago. It navigates some of the most common issues of each person, such as love and relationships. One of the best things about this series is that it follows an anthology format; therefore, you can easily start from any season and episode. Even though the series gained huge popularity, it will not return for a fourth season.

Turn Up Charlie (Cancelled)

Co-created by Idris Alba, Turn Up Charlie is a British comedy web television that stars Elba as a disc jockey. It premiered on Netflix on 15 March 2019. The series follows Charlie (Elba), a disc jockey and a lifelong bachelor who becomes the nanny of his famous friend’s daughter. It also stars Frankie Hervey, JJ Feild, and Piper Perabo. Even though Elba’s performance made it worth a watch, it was highly criticized for poor writing and a predictable plot.

The series could have gained a huge audience due to the amazing star cast; however, Netflix canceled it in 2020.

October Faction (Canceled)

This supernatural drama web television series is based on the comic series of the same name. October Faction was released in January 2020 and stars Megan Follows, Tamara Taylor, J. C. MacKenzie, Maxim Roy, Stephen McHattie, Aurora Burghart, and Gabriel Darku. It was created by Damian Kindler and follows the story of a monster-hunting couple, Fred and Deloris Allen.

The couple returns to their hometown with their children and tries to hide their identities as the town isn’t what it seems. The audience couldn’t dig deeper to find the true meaning of the show; thus, Netflix had to announce its cancelation after two months of its release in March.

Locke and Key (Renewed)

Locke & Key premiered on Netflix on February 7, 2020. It is a supernatural horror drama web television series that was based on the comic book series by the same name. The series stars Darby Stanchfield, Emilia Jones, Connor Jessup, Laysla De Oliveira, Jackson Robert Scott, Griffin Gluck, and Petrice Jones. It revolves around the Locke family, who decide to move to Matheson from Seattle after the murder of Rendell Locke.

It gained plenty of fans due to the mysterious plot with a great storyline. After a month of its release, Netflix announced that the series would be renewed for another season. 

The Haunting of Hill House (Renewed)

The Haunting of Hill House is hands-down one of the most underrated series on Netflix. It is loosely based on Shirley Jackson’s novel by the same name and is a display of every emotion that a person could feel. It features a family that is affected by the tragedy that occurred decades ago and how their past has stained their present and future. Things gradually begin to fall into place and return to normal, which makes us wonder if we would get to see a sequel.

To our surprise, Netflix has renewed a second season, which is expected to release by the end of this year.

The Witcher (Renewed)

Netflix’s Witcher is a fantasy-drama series based on a popular game and novel by Andrzej Sapkowski, a Polish author. The show starts slow but picks up an intense and dark storyline later in the third episode. It features the trend of different timelines in the same series, making it very captivating and confusing. However, it becomes easier to put the pieces together once you start comprehending it.

The action, cinematography, and graphics make it a worthwhile series that keeps the viewers on edge. Its second season is all set to release in 2021, although Netflix is yet to decide the release date.

The Umbrella Academy (Renewed)

The Umbrella Academy is based on a dysfunctional and equally funny family of superhero children who have landed in adulthood and now have different stories. You will get to witness suspense, horror, drama, and action in this sci-fi series until you reach a jaw-dropping climax.

Apart from that, the soundtracks are a delight to the ears and add more to the story’s dramatic elements. Soon after its release, the show became the third-most viewed series on Netflix in 2019, making season two an absolute necessity. If you are a fan, then you’d be glad to know that Netflix has renewed it for a second season!

Dark (Renewed)

Based on the brilliant and hypothetical concept of time travel, Dark is a sci-fi thriller German web series. Yeah, its first season was a bit less tempting, but the second and third installment of the series transformed the way we view time travel. The sudden disappearances of children in the town of Winden unravel the various family relationships in the present, past, and future.

The series got groundbreaking reviews from the audience. However, there is no official news for a fresh season of Dark as of now. But, if it possibly happens, it will have an entirely new cast.

Dead to Me (Cancelled)

The dark comedy web television series, Dead to Me, is created by Liz Feldman and stars Christina Applegate (Jen) and Linda Cardellini (Judy). Jen is a widowed real estate agent who recently lost her husband. She tries to come to terms with her loss and meets Judy in the therapy group, who is also mourning her husband’s death.

Both characters are going through different issues. However, there is more to Judy’s past, which is unveiled later in the series. Two months after the second season’s debut, Netflix announced that the series would end with the third season.

Stranger Things (Renewed)

One of the staples shows on Netflix; Stranger Things is a sci-fi horror web series created by Duffer Brothers. It premiered on July 15, 2016, where the first season focuses on investigating a disappeared young boy. The story also revolves around supernatural events occurring around the town. The cast includes Winona Ryder, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, and Sadie Sink. 

Following the third season, it felt like the show would wrap up soon. However, early this year, the show was renewed for a fourth season.

Love Is Blind (Renewed)

Love is Blind became a highly popular show and attained a worldwide audience in a small amount of time. The popular dating show that is built on the concept of blind dating has seen some amazing responses from its audience who enjoy watching common people rise to fame.  

Good news for all its fans is that this wonderful show after the successful completion of its first season is going to come back in a while. Moreover, the show has been renewed not just for one but two more seasons, meaning double joy for the audiences. 

The Circle (Renewed)

The Circle is an American reality series based on a British TV series of the same name. It is produced by Studio Lambert and Motion Content Group and aired on Netflix in January in 2020. Apart from the American version of the show, Netflix is also planning to launch French and Brazillian versions. The show is based around social media, which is often compared to Catfish and Big Brother. 

It brought people together in an interesting concept where they could be themselves or either pretend to be someone else. It announced that The Circle would be renewed for two more seasons that will be aired around 2021.

Never Have I Ever (Renewed)

This amazing and heartwarming coming of age comedy series, Never Have I Ever won the hearts of people by its adorable storyline. The complicated story of a girl of first-generation American Indian revolves around her quest to become one of the popular kids in school. Along with her friends and many fun stories, she happens to fall in a love triangle at the end of the first season. 

What happens next won’t be a mystery for long as Netflix has announced the renewal of the next season of the series, which will be out in a short while.
