Jimmy Carter has been avoiding the more opulent trappings of the presidency as president. He strolled into a room wearing a $175 business suit, carrying his baggage onto Air Force One, and refusing to have “Hail to the Chief” played. Carter returned to the Georgia home he had built when his presidency ended after one term.
The former president has maintained his thrifty ways while also drawing a gap between himself and his successors. The house is a two-bedroom ranch in rural Plains, Georgia, and it’s only worth $167,000, which is less than the value of the armored Secret Service cars parked outside.
