Nat King Cole & Maria Hawkins Ellington – 1948

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Nat King Cole was a singer and jazz pianist. One fine day in 1946, Cole was backstage at Club Zanzibar in Harlem, when Maria Hawkins, a jazz singer, performed the opening act for the Mills Brothers. Hypnotized by her voice, Cole fell in love and married her on Easter Sunday in 1948.

It was nothing short of being a fancy wedding. With the bride’s blue satin dress, the five-tiered wedding cake, and the 3,000 guests, the Abyssinian Baptist Church had lit up. They defined true love, as Maria was always by Cole’s side until he exhaled his last breath.
