After his epic role as Dustin Hoffman’s father in the film The Graduate and Boy Meets World as Mr. Feeny, he garnered audience attention. His other best-known performance was in St Elsewhere for portraying Dr. Mark Craig, and this role won him Emmy Awards twice.

On the personal front, he married Bonnie Bartlett on June 30, 1951, also an Emmy Award winner. The couple lives with two adopted children in their Los Angeles home.
