Phoenix et Mara se sont rencontrées lors du tournage du film « Her » de Spike Jonze , sorti en 2012. Le film raconte l’histoire d’un homme qui tombe amoureux d’un système d’exploitation informatique, dont la voix est celle de Scarlett Johansson. Mara y incarne le rôle de l’ex-femme de Phoenix dans le film. En 2019, Phoenix a parlé de sa rencontre avec Mara à Vanity Fair et a déclaré : « C’est la seule fille que j’ai jamais cherchée sur Internet ».
